Project Overview

By switching from traditional design GRP grating to d² Dura Grating for its “Island” project, Shepperton Marina has played its part in reducing the environmental impact of its operations. Having installed over 700sqm of d² Dura Grating in the last 12 months, Shepperton has achieved a saving of over 7 tonnes of embodied carbon. That’s the equivalent of 336 trees sequestering carbon for an entire year!

Shepperton Marina in Middlesex is superbly placed as a base for both upper and lower Thames cruising and was recently shortlisted for the TYHA UK Inland Marina of the Year Awards. Open seven days a week, the marina provides a range of secure moorings with electricity and water, as well as large servicing and repair workshops. Prior to 2021, the Marina spent an extensive amount of time and resource replacing wooden deck boards that were subject to extensive weathering and had become ‘end-of-life’

Creating The Island for year round access.

In August 2021, Shepperton opened their innovative new berthing concept, known as ‘The Island’. This unique addition to Basin D features 26 new berths, accommodating vessels from 10 – 14 metres, set amongst a large circular pontoon area featuring Dura Composites’ Dura Grating Mini Mesh product in Sand colour.

Supplied to Walcon Marine, the Dura Grating offered the safest, strongest, fastest and most proven grating on the market.
With the installation of more than 700 square meters of d² Dura Grating in the past year, Shepperton has actively contributed to minimising the environmental footprint of its activities, reducing embodied carbon by over 7 tonnes.

Our GRP grating is strong and durable and the anti-slip surface of Dura Grating is tested to withstand even the wettest, oiliest and iciest conditions, thus ensuring a safe and highly durable walkway that allows marina access throughout the year.

Available in a range of thicknesses and mesh sizes d² Dura Grating products are easy to handle, making installation faster and more cost-effective. They also require little to no maintenance over the course of their life-cycle, ensuring a non-corrosive surface that comes with a 25 year warranty.

Historically, we have spent a lot of time replacing wooden deck boards which we no longer have to do with this product, saving us both time and money, and many of our customers have already complimented us on how safe they feel walking on it. Thanks to the successful installation of our new ‘Island Berths’, we have now established a complete pontoon decking replacement programme where we will replace all of our timber with GRP Dura Grating – so its great for us and great for the environment too!
